AUSTRALIAN CONTEMPORARY

AUSTRALIAN CONTEMPORARY IS AN ONLINE GALLERY REPRESENTING WORKS BY MANY OF AUSTRALIA’S FINEST, INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED, CONTEMPORARY GLASS ARTISTS.

The Director of Australian Contemporary is Suzanne Brett the former Manager and Curator of Kirra Galleries Federation Square Melbourne which gained an International reputation as one of the most important galleries in Australia representing Contemporary Art Glass. For twenty years the gallery ran an ongoing exhibition program both nationally and internationally featuring work by many of the finest glass artists from Australia and New Zealand. The gallery closed in October 2017 when the owner Peter Kolliner OAM, announced his retirement shortly after his eightieth birthday.

In this period Suzanne curated over 140 exhibitions which included 13 consecutive shows at SOFA Chicago (Sculpture, Object and Functional Art) the largest international collectors fair in the world for Contemporary Art Glass. The gallery forged many valued friendships with artists, collectors and members of the AACG (Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass) and they were delighted to host several collector’s groups to the Melbourne leg of their tour when visiting Australia.

Suzanne has been working in the arts for more than forty years. She trained as a goldsmith in the early seventies specialising in lost wax carving. For twenty years she worked as a freelance designer and teacher and her work was exhibited in galleries in Australia and the USA. She ran her own gallery and workshop in Toorak, Melbourne where she collaborated with glass artists around Australia to make a range of artworks that could be used as a canvas for her own designs.

Her ongoing interest in jewellery stems from her training. The annual Flame on Glass exhibition she curated at Kirra had up to thirty flame workers in the show. Many of these made beautiful innovative glass beads and necklaces which were much admired by collectors. Several of these artists are featured on the website and more will be added over the coming months.

She understands the challenges faced by artists and galleries in this ever-changing global economy. In establishing an online gallery Suzanne aims to reconnect collectors with artists they have admired and collected as well as reach a broader audience for Australian Studio Glass.

Australian Contemporary will continue to represent many of the artists who have previously exhibited with Kirra as well as continually source works by talented emerging glass artists in all forms of the medium. Regular newsletters will be sent keeping collectors and glass lovers informed about exciting developments in the Australian Contemporary Art glass industry and new collections as they are added to the site.

If there is an artist whose work you loved not currently represented on our website please contact us and we will endeavor to help you find the right piece for your collection.
